Metra sells a variety of passes and tickets as detailed below. Passes cost a flat rate and allow for unlimited rides during the relevant time period, while the cost of One-Way and 10-Ride tickets is based on a distance-based fare system consisting of ten fare zones. (Riders are charged based on the number of zones they travel through. Click here to see a system map with fare zones. To determine your One-Way or 10-Ride fare, you must know your originating station and your destination station.)

Details about each ticket type are below. All ticket types except Weekend Passes and Day Passes are available at a reduced rate for K-12 students, seniors and other special classes as described below. Use the fare calculator above to see the cost of each type of ticket, full fare and reduced, between your selected origin and destination stations. For information about where to buy tickets, click here. New riders can find more information about the Metra system here.

Monthly Passes are for the exclusive use of the purchaser and are not transferable. Monthly Passes are valid until noon on the first business day of the following month. Refunds for unused Monthly Passes are available per the guidelines that can be found here, but lost, destroyed or stolen Monthly Passes will not be refunded or replaced. Refunds are subject to a $5 fee per transaction if returned after the first day of the month and returns are prorated (see the Monthly Pass refund policy here).

Senior citizens 65 or older, customers with disabilities and Medicare cardholders who have an RTA-issued Reduced Fare Permit are eligible for a reduced fare ticket. If you are enrolled in the Illinois Circuit Breaker program and have an RTA-issued Ride Free Circuit Permit, you are eligible to ride free. If you are not in possession of either permit, you must contact the RTA to apply. Click here for more information.

All fare policies concerning standard student fares also apply to home-schooled students. To meet documentation requirements, the student must present a letter with the name and address of the person providing the home schooling as teacher/principal at the top, signed and notarized. Rent-to-own programs in Chicago generally offer used vehicles, with payments due weekly or bi-weekly. The process is very similar to the one that might be utilized by a buy here pay here dealership. However, unlike BHPH dealerships, they offer the additional flexibility of allowing you to return the vehicle and simply pay what you owe up to that point. This can be advantageous if you commute from the south suburbs or northwest Indiana, but are uncertain of how long you'll need a car, or if you have a job, but are worried it won't last.

Unlike a pure rental arrangement, rent-to-own auto dealers also offer you the advantage of being able to own your vehicle at the end of the contract term. A part of your weekly or bi-weekly payments goes towards the ownership of the car, unlike a new car lease where you would have to pay a sizeable buyout at the end.

Just be sure you understand your rent to own vehicle contract thoroughly. While there won't be mileage restrictions if you end up buying out your vehicle, you may find yourself paying over-mileage fees if you've driven the car extensively and decide to turn it in early, just as you would on a leased car. Also, because these are often used cars without warranties, be sure to get estimates on how much the basic repairs will cost.

The biggest advantage of renting to own a car in Chicago is that everyone qualifies, no matter what their credit looks like. So, if you live on the west side and have terrible credit, you can get the same deal as someone with marginal credit would on the south side. In fact, many Illinois RTO car lots won't even run a credit check on you, requiring instead only a down payment, proof of income, and identification before signing. Of course, the trade off here is that rent-to-own financing may not help you rebuild your credit score. So, if you are primarily concerned with rebuilding your credit, you should maybe consider one of our Chicago car financing programs.

Illinois State Rep. Rita Mayfield introduced HB 4377 in January of 2016. She began pushing for the legislation after hearing from many of her constituents in the Waukegan area who would put hundreds of hard-earned dollars down on a car that would just break down within a week of driving it off the lot. She says she was unable to get any of those "buy here, pay here" dealerships to make good on the bad vehicles they sold.

Rep. Mayfield says in just over a year and a half, she can tell the new law is having a positive impact. Dealers in her district are now repairing cars before they sell them and when there is a problem within the warranty period, dealers will fix it for free.

To compile a list of the best donut shops in America, 24/7 Tempo consulted articles and rankings on a variety of sites, including Eater, Food & Wine, Thrillist, Time Out, and Tasting Table, as well as numerous local and regional sources, then made a final choice based on editorial discretion. Some of these shops offer virtually nothing but donuts, while others are full-service bakeries or cafés known for the quality of their donuts as well as other foods. Most of the shops here are independent one-unit operations; exceptions are noted as such. 041b061a72
